Accountability, Setting Goals, The Process

Accountability

By signing this pledge, I/we attest that our values are in line with those outlined within the pledge:

  • I/we acknowledge the harm that white supremacy, patriarchy, and heterosexism has caused in our industry and world, and I/we pledge to do our part to right past wrongs.

  • I/we recognize the environmental stress that the wine industry creates, and are committed to creating a future that normalizes the regeneration of natural ecologies through viticulture.

  • I/we commit to centering and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities.

  • I/we will work consistently  to make our workspace a braver and safer one, both in our personal interactions, public-facing interactions and official policies.

  • If, to our knowledge, I/we have not always lived by the values of the pledge, I/we will disclose our past actions, make ourselves accountable and work to rebuild trust.

  • I/we will hold each other and businesses accountable in a mutually respectful and safe manner.

Goal-Setting Requirements

Goals

Set three goals and share them with the Pledge community.

This WINE Pledge is aspirational. We expect that all who co-sign will take their commitment to it seriously. No one is expected to meet every tenet immediately but to set three goals to work on within their specified time frames: a short term (three month), mid-term (six months) and long range (12 months or more).

Our mission is to build a better, more just industry and to collaborate, as co-signers, sharing information that helps one another meet our goals. Some goals might be met within this time period, others might take longer. Together as a community we will support each other through a safe space online network for signatories that you will be invited to join upon signing. Joining this network is a requirement as it will let other Pledge signees and the public know that you are doing the work.

At least one of your goals should be inline with the sector of your work and the areas where your company or you as an individual most need to improve. For instance, if you work in wine production, you might consider setting a goal to grow or source fruit from regenerative or ecologically farmed vineyards if you don’t do that already. If diversity is an issue at your company, that should be prioritized. Remember that your work will set an example for others to follow.

We will have quarterly meetings so that we can check in and support one another. Attending the meetings is not mandatory but encouraged. We will also plan quarterly educational forums to help us achieve our goals.

Transparency

No one is perfect. Every business and individual makes mistakes and the WINE Pledge community is not about shaming or policing people, or digging into past issues. However, if you feel you violated tenets of this pledge and have not taken responsibility for your actions, please communicate these concerns to the Pledge committee. One of the intentions of the Pledge is to support one another so that we can all do better in the future. For this to occur, it is necessary to take responsibility for the ways we may have harmed individuals in the past.

The Process

Once you sign the WINE Pledge, you will receive a welcome letter and information so that you can begin your work as a Pledge signatory. We welcome all who sign this Pledge to become involved as a committee collaborator in the work going forward. As the Pledge is a working document, it will evolve with the times and it benefits our collective mission to have new voices and ideas as we center equity, opportunity, and fairness in the wine industry.
